In certain biomes, trees can with Moss on the wood. You can "scrape" the Moss off of the logs by right-clicking with an axe, similar to turning a log into a Stripped Log. Scraping the Moss off will turn it into an itemized Moss or "Algae" This can be used in various crafting recipes. Moss-wise, it can be used to make Moss blocks and carpets when put in a crafting table.
When placed on blocks, the Moss adds a "layer" to the outside of the block, similar to vines and lichen. There are 4 layers of moss you can add to a block. Layering moss on top of a block starts off with a small spot in the middle, which slowly spreads out with each layer until it forms a moss carpet. When placed on the sides, the moss slowly creeps upward with each layer until covering the entire face. When placed underneath a block, it turns into "Hanging moss", which slowly drapes longer with each layer.
This applies to all "full" blocks, the sides of Fences and Walls, the bottoms of slabs, stairs, lanterns, and signs.
Another crafting and decorative feature the Moss could bring are Wood Stains. Regular moss can be added to a crafting table, similar to dying wool, and "stain" the wood green. When the Moss is combined with dyes, it can turn into different colored Wood Stains. However, with the many different shades of wood within the game, I understand it might only work with certain woods (such as Oak or Pale oak).
