Similar to hoppers but it can work sideways and it has a FIFO-like behaviour, the items you put in one end are popped from the other end in the same order. They could also be half-pipes, so you have access to its contents. The slots are filled from left to right. If you take the leftmost item then it is filled by whatever is feeding items into the pipe. If you take any other item then all the items on its left get pushed one slot further to fill in the gap.
And also there could be different oxidation levels which determines the delay between updates to the items in the pipe. Heavily oxidised pipes transport items more slowly. Placement behaviour could be similar to rails. A straight pipe if no other pipes are adjacent. Otherwise the pipe curves or straightens to connect property to nearby pipes. To simplify the connection a pipe has only two ports, which can be used for input or output. If one port is fed as an input (from a hopper, a dropper or another pipe) and the other port is drained as an output (from a hopper or another pipe) then it acts as a normal one-way pipe. If both ports are fed with items then it takes randomly from one of them until its capacity is filled. If both ports are drained then the items are taken out of the pipe randomly until its contents are empty. A player may also insert or take out items manually from the pipe.
