I think the idea of simplifying a jukebox setup to have songs lined up is a good idea but as is it feels antithetical to the usual minecraft design. its a one block solution that feels arbitrary in its current implementation. my suggestion is a bit more involved but i think it is a nice middle ground.
two new blocks, the sequencer and the selector. Variants of the dropper that work differently. both have 5x3 inventories rather than the dropper's 3x3
the sequencer always drops the first item in the inventory and then shifts all the items one slot over. a hopper would favour the last slot in the inventory instead of the usual first slot (not necessary if too far from the normal implementation).
The selector is similar but uses signal strength, with the strength it is powered by determining which slot is dropped. the signal strength could also determine which slot is filled so that the player can select one strength and keep it steady until the item is returned (e.g. a disk) to place it back in the same slot before the next item is released
this would create new redstone challenges to recreate the same functionality of the chest while also providing new functional blocks that will no doubt find all manner of uses in other parts of the game.
In my opinion (biased, I know) this new solution is a little richer. im sure the players would be fine with you recalling the feature for now in order to rework it for a later drop (maybe coincides with the musical sift?)
