For some multiplayer worlds/realms/servers, having a locator map instantly show the location of players thousands of blocks away can cause many issues. It creates visual clutter which for example can make finding your own icon on treasure maps difficult. It also means worlds with factions with hidden bases or farms require wearing mob heads or outright disabling locator maps (including treasure maps) to prevent someone from crafting a few locator maps and finding you with relative ease.
Whilst having locator maps be this strong may be good for some servers, it is not good for all so a setting on the world similar to show coordinates that limits the locator map to just the holder would be helpful. Better than that would be a dropdown menu like render distance to change the distance at which a locator map can locate other players from with a few discrete options of "always show" down to never.
