Hello Mojang team,
I would like to suggest two combined quality-of-life improvements:
1. Interaction fix for signs placed on chests (Sneak logic):
Currently, placing a sign on a chest makes opening it frustrating, as clicking often triggers text editing instead of opening the chest.
I suggest aligning this behavior with standard mechanics (like hoppers):
- Standing (Normal click): Always opens the chest.
- Sneaking (Shift-click): Allows editing the sign text.
2. Direct surface engraving (Wood, Stone, Shelves, Walls):
To complement this, adding a way to carve short text directly onto blocks would drastically improve organization and building aesthetics:
- Full storage walls & shelves: On full walls of shelves, signs take up too much space and block the view. Furthermore, displayed items do not show specifics (e.g., an axe with Silk Touch vs. Fortune, or materials sharing similar sprites). Engraved text on shelf edges allows instant identification without visual clutter.
- Subtle notes: Etching subtle words directly into walls or doors (like "Welcome") without needing a bulky wooden sign.
Implementation notes:
- Use an item (flint, shears, or a chisel) to etch text directly onto a block's texture (no separate hit-box).
- Can be restricted to single-player and private/whitelisted worlds to bypass public chat moderation concerns.
Thank you!
