I think glazed terracotta could be expanded into a more customisable decorative block, using a system similar to banners and the loom.
Instead of having only the existing fixed glazed terracotta designs, players could create their own designs by combining predefined geometric patterns, colours and orientations. This would not be a freeform texture editor. every pattern would be made from Minecraft-designed components, just like banner patterns.
For example a player could choose a terracotta colour, add a border, select a diamond or stripe pattern, choose its colour, and potentially add another layer. The result would be a unique glazed terracotta block following Minecraft's existing visual style.
This could make glazed terracotta much more useful for builders. Players could create their own mosaics, floors, walls, roofs, murals and other architectural decorations without needing completely custom textures.
It would also give glazed terracotta a unique purpose, a building material where players design the pattern while Minecraft still controls the individual visual elements.
I think this could significantly expand Minecraft's building possibilities while remaining within the game's existing art style and limitations.
