The ice ball doesn't appear to give the freezing effect, and I was under the impression that it would

I actually like that the ice ball does not give the freezing effect. That way it gives you a sort of progression: snowballs do no damage, ice balls do damage, and freezing tipped arrows do damage and give the freezing effect.

A freezing splash potion should put out more fires than a splash water bottle. It could even freeze blocks such as water and lava into ice and obsidian. It could also prevent undead mobs from burning in sunlight, or maybe even Piglins from becoming zombified in the overworld. Though it could do even more damage to heat-based mobs like Blazes and Striders

The freezing effect could convert zombies into frostbite like powder snow does

The freezing effect should protect Snow Golems from warm environments, allowing them to exist in places like deserts or the Nether. Same with powder snow

I love how it turns Striders cold, even when they are in lava. However, if they are already cold on land, I notice that it actually makes them warm first and then cold once they start taking damage. However, I'm actually fine with this. It fits with the idea of people who get frostbite feeling uncomfortably warm

I've heard that strays are hard enough as it is, but they could be made to shoot potions of freezing rather than potions of slowness.

I noticed that the freezing effect is mitigated when you are on fire or in lava, which I like. It doesn't remove the effect, you still have it, it just doesn't affect you. Once you get out of those situations, the effect resumes.

However you are still burned by the fire. What if they actually cancelled each other out? Either the fire was actually put out, or it does not affect you?

Or what if freezing was like a reverse fire resistance? What if one raises your temperature so you are cold in normal environments but fine in hot environments, and the other lowers your temperature so that you are warm in normal environments but fine in cold environments?

While it doesn't do anything when you are standing in fire or lava, it still does things when you are on fire but not in fire. This should be changed

I think it still could use a few changes to make it different from poison.
Before the player starts taking damage, hearts should start turning blue from left to right (to indicate how cold they are). When all red hearts are blue the player would start taking damage. So you would freeze faster the less health you have.

I feel like this effect shouldn't affect Blazes and Magma Cubes, considering that they're the hottest mobs in Minecraft (and not in the attractive way)

    • The freezing effect feels mostly balanced, however does not feel like it should be a status effect. It seems to give more of an environmental feel then a buff/debuff.
    • In player-versus-player combat the effect feels mostly balanced and definitely seems like something that would be more commonly used than other splash/lingering potions.
    • I think it would be worth the effort to anyone who likes or wants to use freezing in their play-style/combat, but I'm not sure it would be sought out after in PvE. It does seem like an item that has a lower entry barrier. Not sure if it is necessarily good or bad, but seems like a cheap potion to craft.

Witches that spawn in cold biomes can throw splash freezing potions. Traps that can shoot them out too.

Can find them sometimes in the secret room beneath some Igloos.

I wonder how much the player will actually experience the freezing effect naturally in this game outside of PVP. My recommendation is that similar to the sulfer cave biome, there should be a block that generates in those water pockets that when a player goes into the water it gives them the freezing effect.

I think that the freezing effect should also protect against fire damage a bit, like walking across magma or campfires, and should delay the time before you catch on fire from normal fire. I might also protect against fire aspect and flame, but both og those together might be a bit overpowered.

I would suggest having a cold protection potion

I think it would be cool if, over time, the effect would actually make the player increasingly immobile until they simply couldn't move until the effect wore off.

And the new zombie would have the same attack, but you would become slower with each attack you took until you were completely frozen.

Simply wearing a boot and getting rid of the effect seems a bit unfair; instead, each part of the leather armor could have a heat level that could be added up, using the entire armor to provide enough heat to avoid freezing.

By using only part of the armor you would only have a reduction in the effect, but to truly avoid suffering, you would have to use the entire set.

I think it would be interesting if this functionality was made into an enchantment as well, like “Frost Aspect”.

    Freeze effect redesign suggestion:
Freezing slowly disables natural regeneration, movement speed and damages.

    maybe only in hard difficulty

Any time the player is in water while it's snowing or while raining in a snow biome, they automatically get the cold effect just like in powdered snow.

standing near campfires should make the frozen effect wear off faster.

side idea if nether fire is infinite on netherak then ice freezing effect should be prolonged on ice blocks.
regular fire remove the frozen effect as you take fire damage and then the fire gets put out by it.

Ice Balls feel kinda underwhelming right now, as they're just consumable throwing weapons without any gimmicks. Maybe they could make damaging ice shards when they hit something?

You never actually get affected by the cold except in powder snow, which has the same effect as freezing anyways

Freezing should be able to block the elytra. This would make it able to actually be used in PvP.

Shouldn't be a potion effect, curing it with milk is kind of weird? Should be more like being set on fire, independent and free of milk. This would also open it up to being an enhantment as well, matching with fire aspect.

The ice balls don't seem that helpful in combat. They do little damage, and being consumed and stacking to 16 means they get used up very quickly. In order to effectively use them for combat, you need to have a lot of them which clutters inventory. I'm not really sure how this could be resolved, since dealing more damage might be too powerful and isn't that interesting. Maybe introducing a unique use for them could help; I understand why they don't apply the freezing effect, but if they did it would give more incentive to use them in interesting ways with other weapons (i.e. throwing an ice ball and waiting for it to take effect before engaging in combat).
