The sawmill would be a woodworking block specifically to use wood more efficiently.
Similar to the stonecutter, the sawmill would offer better return when using it to create slabs, stairs, etc.
It will also be able to strip logs! Similar to anvils, it would cost some durability of the sawmill each time you strip a certain amount of logs with it. It would be considerably higher than the anvil's durability, because logs would be stripped far more often than anvils are used, but it would save your axe's durability.
BARK! When you strip logs, either with the new sawmill block, or with your axe, between 1 and 4 "bark" items will drop. When put in a crafting table in a + shape AROUND the stripped log in the centre, you can recreate the original log! Sawmills would consistently give 3 - 4 bark items, with a smaller chance to give 1 or 2, whereas stripping with your axe, which in real life would be far more imprecise, would more often give 2 or 3, and have a small chance to give 4 bark items and a medium chance to give 1.
While these are only estimates, this is a ballpark:
Sawmill: 5% chance of 1 bark, 15% chance of 2 bark, 60% chance of 3 bark, 20% chance of 4 bark
Axe: 20% chance of 1 bark, 60% chance of 2 bark, 15% chance of 3 bark, 5% chance of 4 bark.
As part of this, a new villager profession would be introduced - the LUMBERJACK!
The "wood" recipe would also be overhauled, instead using 1 normal log plus a bark on the top and bottom in a crafting table, to create the "wood" item!
