I suggest allowing rails to be placed on the underside of blocks, letting minecarts travel upside-down.
Instead of adding separate upside-down versions of every rail, existing rails could simply support placement on the bottom face of blocks. Normal, powered, detector, and activator rails could all work this way.
Special mechanic: Minimum speed
An upside-down minecart should need a minimum speed to remain attached to the track. If it slows below that speed, it falls.
This would make momentum and powered rails important when designing upside-down tracks. A continuous track could transition between the floor, walls, and ceiling, while an incomplete track would cause the minecart to fall.
Redstone potential
This mechanic could create a completely new type of redstone timing system. For example, a minecart could enter an upside-down section and gradually lose speed. Once it reaches the minimum speed, it falls onto another track or activates a mechanism.
The delay could be controlled by the length of the track, the starting speed, and the placement of powered rails. This could create a physical timer similar in purpose to a repeater, but based on minecart movement and distance.
Upside-down rails would add new possibilities for transportation, roller coasters, building, and redstone without requiring an entirely new transportation system.
