I propose adding tree stumps to Minecraft; they would serve as the bottom-most block of the tree, and the block beneath the tree would transform into rooted dirt.
Unlike regular wood, stumps would take twice as long to break. I think this would be a cool mechanic: players chopping down trees might leave behind stumps they couldn't be bothered to break. This would allow us to see all the forests players have cut down and visualize the scale of deforestation.
Also, over time, a sapling could grow on the stump and eventually sprout into a new tree.
This would create an automatic tree farm, as the tree would grow directly out of the stump on its own.
Using bone meal on a stump would spawn a sapling on it, and using bone meal on that sapling would cause a tree to grow right out of the stump.
Stumps would also be highly fire-resistant; even during a forest fire, the stumps would remain and eventually sprout into new trees.
If a sapling falls onto a stump, it would instantly plant itself there.
