I propose creating a separate mode featuring more realistic survival mechanics, while renaming all existing Survival worlds to "Casual"
You would be able to convert your world from Casual to Survival mode within the game
In addition to complex mechanics like thirst and temperature, this mode would feature altered game physics
Torches (standard, copper, and soul) go out over time or in the rain and require a flint and steel to relight
However, torches now burn away the block directly above them (literally consuming the block, not just setting it on fire)
If you coat a torch with glowstone dust, it won't set things on fire, but it will still go out and require constant relighting
Redstone torches coated with glowstone dust act as lamps: they light up when receiving a signal and go out when the signal stops
The only torches that stay lit indefinitely are the glowstone-coated redstone torches
Lanterns and lamps also go out; the exceptions are glowstone and prismarine
New fire mechanics: fire now ignites and consumes wood blocks, turning them into burnt or charred wood
Water now flows away when placed; it spreads in a straight line for exactly 8 blocks, forming a thin layer at each step. It no longer breaks your fall
In other words: 1 bucket = 1 block of water
However, falling into water that is 2 blocks deep will still save you from fall damage
Water & lava generators can be obtained in the new "Steve Dimension"
Nights are now dark, and sleeping in an uncomfortable location causes nightmares
