From what I've observed players seem to have problems keeping up with the Allay, and giving it commands. The concept of the Allay many agree is an amazing one, but it feels like it's missing something, like some level of interaction. So heres my suggestion...
After freeing the Allay, and giving it a cookie to tame it; left clicking on the Allay again will open up an interaction menu. Within are two inventory slots (one for the item you gave it, and another for found items), and a series of commands you can give it. The command include Wait, Follow player, Explore, Give items to player, and Give items to Noteblock. (once you find a noteblock the Allay likes)
Personally I think that an interaction menu like this will make the Allay a more user friendly experience, and be easier for new players to get into the game. I think it could also add a level of intelligence to the Allay, and make it feel like a true in game companion. Also, maybe even one day this functionally could be added to other pets in game, but of course that's a idea for another day...
