Hey, Mojang!
In the current world generation, water is a product of particular biomes or noise values. Rivers inhabit low noise values, while oceans are entire biomes like any other. This approach is great in terms of most gameplay. However a problem arises when trying to travel by sea. Ultimately, all water comes in contact with land, meaning that no matter where you navigate your boat, you'll have to get out of it and cross a landmass of some kind. Even in cases when this crossing is very small, the amount of water present will often be minuscule and very difficult to navigate.
So, the first solution you might expect is to return to the continental generation of pre-1.7 worlds. However, this would lead to a very boring gameplay experience, I am aware. Instead, I propose a hopefully different solution: Continental Separation!
Continental Separation would first divide the world into continents via Voronoi noise. Then, these continents are shrunken (the degree of shrinking could be related to the normal noise generation). The space between these continents can then be made into oceans or rivers! That way, no matter how far on water you go, you could still go farther! It would also prevent players from getting lost at sea as was the case in the old generation, as these would be far less prone to extended straight lines.
These new channels could be existing ocean biomes, or new biomes entirely, but either way, I believe it would be a great addition to the game!
