Precious stones power the enchanting system, with rarer gems unlocking rarer enchants. Crafting a book and quill with a gem transfers a random enchantment from that gem's specific pool onto the book. The enchanting table then acts as a direct application tool, letting you place specific enchants directly onto gear using the required gem and XP. Higher-level enchants still require more bookshelves surrounding the table.
