Right now, upgrading to netherite armor is a flex, with the only actual upgrades being more durability, more knockback resistance and not burning in lava. Minecraft even made netherite armor and tools harder to obtain with the netherite upgrade templates. Netherite could be a much better upgrade if it increased blast, fire and projectile protection, maybe even near fire resistance. It could also make you travel through portals faster, or be able to swim in lava. This could be given as individual pieces or a set bonus.
My reasoning for these specific buffs are listed here:
Blast Prot: Netherite is one of the only blocks that don't blow up without being waterlogged, having two types of it as ancient debris and netherite blocks. Ancient debris is 1/4 of an ingot, which is all you need to upgrade 1 armor piece, so a full set of netherite is 16 ancient debris mixed with gold and layered over diamond, which should be enough to protect you from most of explosions and not lose any dura from explosions.
Fire Prot: Netherite comes from the hottest parts of the hottest place, being the deep areas of the nether which in theory is the hottest. Netherite doesn't burn and as I said earlier a full set has 16 ancient debris, which should make your fire resistant or near it, without taking any durability.
Projectile Prot: This is mostly a case of netherite strength
Other buffs: Netherite comes from the nether, so traveling faster in portals makes sense. Swimming in lava just feels right.
