To Mojang Studios and Microsoft,
We respectfully ask Mojang Studios to rename the item currently called “Beetroot Soup” in the English (US) version of Minecraft to “Borscht.”
The main reason is historical accuracy. “Borscht” is the historically correct name of the dish itself, not simply a modern English description of a soup containing beetroot. The word has been used for centuries to refer to this traditional dish, including in historical Ukrainian sources.
This name is also officially recognized by UNESCO. In 2022, UNESCO inscribed “Culture of Ukrainian borscht cooking” on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and officially refers to the dish as “borscht.”
In contrast, “Beetroot Soup” is a generic descriptive term that only describes an ingredient and does not preserve the traditional name of the dish. There is an important difference between translating a dish's name and replacing it with a generic description.
The dish was not historically known simply as “beetroot soup”; “borscht” is its historically correct name. Using “Borscht” in Minecraft would make the English localization more historically accurate and respectful of the dish's cultural heritage.
The change would not affect gameplay, the recipe, texture, or mechanics. It would simply correct the item's name.
We therefore ask Mojang Studios to rename “Beetroot Soup” to “Borscht” in the English (US) localization of Minecraft in the interests of historical and cultural accuracy.
