I'm here to contribute to the rebalance of the spear's mechanics so it can be a reliable early game alternative weapon to the sword & axe. And fun to use against mobs & players.
The problem
The spear is a fun weapon with a unique and powerful gimmick that makes sense too. But currently the jab attack (base attack) feels very unbalanced. Despite the spear being a weapon meant to keep your distance between you and your opponent, the spear fails to do so because the weapon is too slow, making that when you jab once, you hit your opponent backwards far away from you indeed, but by the time your spear reloads from its cooldown, your opponent is already in front of you. And you can't fight back either because the spear has a minimal block reach which makes you not able to hit anything if its close to you by 1 block.
The solution
In order to make the spear a reliable weapon by itself and make it live to its purpose, the spear should keep its current damage, but it must be at least as fast as a sword in every tier (so it doesn't mess with muscle memory with the same weapon). Dealing low damage but at a very fast pace.
Of course the minimal block reach must be removed, since it's a non-intuitive feature and makes newer players very confused since there's no visible feedback to why that happens.
When using a spear paired with a shield, right clicking should prioritize the shield instead of the spear's charge.
Why?
Spears in real life rivals swords, it should be the case too in Minecraft.
