I would love to see squirrels added as a new passive mob that brings more life and useful behavior to Minecraft’s forests.
Squirrels could collect special tree seeds, nuts, or cones and store up to three of them in their cheeks at once. Their cheeks could visibly become fuller depending on whether they are carrying one, two, or three items.
After collecting them, a squirrel would search for suitable ground and bury each item in a different spot. Later, it may return to dig one back up and eat it, but sometimes it would forget where it buried it. A forgotten seed would then grow into the matching tree sapling after a short time.
Players could give these items to squirrels, but would not be able to plant them directly themselves. This would make the squirrel’s behavior unique and give the mob a real purpose beyond decoration.
The mechanic could work with several tree types, with appropriate seeds, nuts, or cones for each one, including the new poplar tree. Squirrels could also naturally find some of these items in forests.
This would let squirrels slowly help regrow forests and could also create interesting semi-automatic tree farming possibilities, while still feeling like natural animal behavior. Squirrels could climb logs and leaves, making them feel at home in forest biomes.
