Ever since their debut in Alpha Minecraft, Bookshelves have had the same crafting recipe: 6 wood planks (later updated to allow any wood type to be used) and 3 books. When broken without a Silk Touch tool, Bookshelves drop 3 books. But what if those were signed books or even enchanted books?
Enter Custom Bookshelves (name is debatable--suggestions are welcome). They look like regular Bookshelves and can be crafted the same way, only using signed and enchanted books alongside default ones. Any of these three items can be used, as long as they total 3 books. When broken without Silk Touch, they drop whatever books were used to craft them.
"But we have Chiseled Bookshelves now. They work the same way!" However, the Custom Bookshelves have several unique functions.
- Their look can fool base looters that ignore regular Bookshelves in enchanting rooms and other locations. This can be ideal for hiding special books you don't want to lose.
- They can be found in any naturally spawning structure that has normal Bookshelves. This includes Villages, Woodland Mansions, and, of course, Strongholds.
- They have a chance of possessing rare enchanted books, a chance that increases in larger numbers of Custom Bookshelves, such as Stronghold Libraries with balconies.
