I recently discovered that creepers can explode when accidentally hit by a spear-wielding zombie, even when the player is outside the creeper’s detection range.
I initially reported this as a bug, but Mojang’s Triage Team confirmed that this behavior is “Working as Intended.” I understand that creepers are designed to retaliate against mobs that damage them, but I believe this behavior should be reconsidered.
The problem occurs because zombies can detect players from farther away than creepers. A zombie can target a player, attack with a spear, and accidentally hit a creeper standing between them. If the player is outside the creeper’s detection range, the creeper cannot target the player and instead retaliates against the zombie. Since a creeper’s attack is an explosion, it starts its explosion countdown.
This means a creeper can explode even though the player did not attack it, enter its detection range, or directly interact with it.
I think creeper explosions should remain more predictable and controllable by the player. This can also cause unexpected explosions in mob farms and other technical builds.
I am not suggesting that creepers should never retaliate against other mobs. Instead, please consider preventing a creeper from exploding when retaliating against a mob that accidentally damaged it while attacking another target.
