The idea aimes to improve inventory management:
More and more stairs and slabs are added to the game (highly welcomed) but every material one wants to build with takes up more inventory space as a consequence.
This could be highly simplified if it was possible to place full block, stair and slab all while holding the block-item in your hand. Which variation will be placed could be toggled at the press of a button (and indicated with for example a small square / L / line above the hotbar slot to visualise full block, stair and slab).
Toggling between "place full block mode", "place stair mode" and "place slab mode" must only be possible while actually having the full-block-item in your inventory. Placing any of the three variations should consume one item from the stack in your hotbar for the sake of balancing.
Adressing possible concens / balancing questions:
1. This feature would not make crafting slabs obsolete at all because crafting offers 2 slabs per block instead of one as describes above.
2. If the toggle option offers a one to one conversion between blocks places and items held, the crafting table recipe for stairs would need to be buffed else it would be much worse option. (Similar to how it IS currently the worse option to the stone cutter when it comes to all stone related stairs.)
3. Does this harm the identity of Minecraft as a game of mining and crafting? Only if it identifies as Minecraftstairscraftslabs which it thankfully doesnt :)
