I think Minecraft would benefit from a new Rope item, separate from String. It could be used for climbing, decoration and connecting structures.
Crafting: 4 String could craft 2 Ropes.
Mechanics: Ropes could be placed vertically and climbed like ladders, but they wouldn't require a wall behind them. They could also connect two nearby solid blocks, creating a hanging rope between them. Multiple ropes could be connected to create longer structures, with a maximum length of 16 blocks.
Horizontal ropes could have a slight sag to make them look more natural. They would not act as solid blocks and could not support blocks or entities.
Limitations: Ropes could only attach to solid blocks, have a maximum length, and would break if their attachment point was destroyed. They should not replace scaffolding or Leads.
Uses: Ropes could be used for climbing cliffs and caves, building rope bridges, decorating medieval structures, creating ship rigging, hanging decorations, making cranes, or adding detail to mines and towers.
A Rope would be a relatively simple addition that could provide many new possibilities for both building and exploration while fitting naturally into Minecraft's existing mechanics.
