Minecraft's gear progression is largely linear: each new tier is intended to replace the previous one. This means that when stronger gear is added, older gear eventually becomes obsolete.
I propose making future late-game gear branching upgrades instead. Diamond would remain the baseline, while new materials could offer different upgrade paths rather than simply being stronger tiers.
These upgrades could use the existing Netherite system: upgrade Diamond gear using a Template and the new material. However, each upgrade should have a distinct specialization, drawback, or tradeoff. For example, one armor set might prioritize defense and durability at the cost of mobility, while another could sacrifice protection for speed or other utility.
Netherite itself could also receive a drawback or specialization so it becomes one branch rather than the objectively best option.
The goal is for late-game players to choose gear based on their playstyle and situation rather than simply replacing their equipment whenever a stronger material is introduced.
This would also allow Minecraft to add new late-game materials without creating an endless vertical progression of increasingly powerful gear
