Like Copper Golem, I believe the Glare would benefit from a redesign of its original functionality. Instead of identifying dark spots which monsters can spawn, Glare now reveals ANY kinds of mobs by highlighting them with glowing status effect (same effect that spectral arrow uses) that surrounds you -- even through walls!
The initial proposed Glare purpose would be quite redundant due to the hostile mob spawning rule change. So, I hope with this redesign we're able to keep Glare's personality while giving it a lasting companion role in cave exploration.
Spawning
Glare spawns naturally in lush caves. It roughly has a spawn chance of 8%, similar to Camels in desert. Glare wanders among glow berry vines and moss.
Befriending
Feeding a Glare glow berries will make hearts appear, indicating it will trust and follow you for about 5 minutes. After that, it becomes grumpy and returns to wandering unless fed again.
Ability
While following you, feeding it another glow berry will grant you "Glaring" status effect; an effect that lets you see nearby mobs within 40 blocks by visually outlining them as if they're affected by the Glowing effect. This includes both hostile and passive mobs.
The Glare helps players to notice life lurking behind walls or dark corners.
Final notes about why this take for Glare works:
- Glare gives glow berries another meaningful use.
- It complements Night Vision instead of replacing it.
- All while preserving the Glare's identity as a creature connected to darkness.
