Old systems could use another look; I propose a few new workbench identities as a foundation with supporting changes
- Anvil: Physical change. Repair, upgrade, and apply armor trims. (Item naming remains as well, could be thought of as embossing.)
- Grindstone: Improve enchantments at a cost. Use matching items and enchantments to upgrade enchantments while costing some durability.
- Enchanting table: dis/enchanting. Now disenchants and allows use of books to enchant. No other functional changes from normal.
- Smithing table: efficient metal crafting. Excluding player gear, the table would now use metal to craft things like doors, grates, rails, lanterns and more using less metal with required crafting items.
Supporting Ideas:
- Mending rework: Repairing now requires player action using levels at the anvil, this does not require material. This works better with Mojang's vision of player action being the core of the change in the world and tools not being permanent. In a few words: If something breaks, it's because of the player.
- Remove the Hidden Repair Penalty: This function fundamentally works against the repair system. By removing the penalty and reworking mending, a system with fewer extremes emerges. Players keep the gear they want and it's not taken for granted.
- Repair Costs based on total tiers of enchantments and crafting recipe.
- Chiseled Bookshelves could add enchantments of stored books to the enchantment table. This adds value to exploration
