Villagers have a problem. Or really, their trades. I know the trade rebalance system exists, but I've got another idea.
In real life emeralds are a variant of a mineral called beryl. My idea is to base the villager trading system off beryl's variants. Rarer types of beryl give higher level trades. The rarest beryl is currently red beryl, but I don't know how that would fit into the game. So we use emeralds, or green beryl, for high level trades.
This would require emeralds to be harder to get from villagers. They'd only be sold by the highest level villagers and specific ones too, like a new mining villager. The rarity needs to strike a good balance. Players shouldn't quit in search for emeralds and settle for a lower tier trade, but it shouldn't be so easy that we could stockpile Mending or Efficiency 5 books like we are now.
Now this next thing might be a bit off, but my idea of emeralds could be made more common in the Nether. You'd find more emeralds, but they'd be in places like under lava lakes since the real life environments these minerals form in are extreme. I would say my idea for piglins with beryl, but I think that would be to far for one update. Or not. It's be the same with villagers, but this time gold in the nether would be a bit more rare and yield better items from piglin bartering.
