A New Way to Clutch: Leaf Piles

Spawning naturally in the dappled forest, or craftable with 4 leaf litter items, the leaf pile would significantly reduce fall damage. When a player lands in it, it breaks and places up to 4 leaf litter blocks on surrounding tiles. In the inventory, it stacks, to 16 or 64 for balance purposes. Other people have suggested similar blocks, but this integration would make it useful for speedrunning and manhunts because it is craftable in the inventory and because it only visions your fall: not people following you. It would also be useful for exploration, as skilled players can place it to break their fall to get down from high places. There are many options for this already, but few so cheap and accessible in the very early game.
