This idea has been mentioned by a lot of people, but I think it could have more potential.
Charred wood could be a new varient of wood, not a wood type, that appears burnt. You could use a new type of workbench called a pyrography table to char wood, planks, etc. This could be a huge benefit to builders as you can make burnt shacks, houses, anything you can come up with. You can find charred wood naturally in a burnt forest, a rare subbiome that consists in its own forest biome. The burnt forest will be consistent of charred logs made from any type of wood and burnt grass. Burnt grass can be made from either setting a grass block on fire or finding it naturally. Burnt grass appears to be black with a loud sound twice as loud as normal grass simular to that of dead leaves. The sound of burnt grass attracts mobs toward you, which could make a good mob farm use. In the burnt forest, a structure called the burnt house will generate in any burnt forest. The burnt house is made with charred wood made from the surronding forest. The interior displays an old players base that was burnt, but not burnt down. The structure contains a double chest containing charred wood, planks, and basic tools with durability taken. Just to summarize, charred wood is a new wood variant, not a wood type, that is naturally generated in burnt forests or made from using a pyrography table. There is a new structure and a new grass type with a special function.
