Shield Types & Weights
To make shielding more strategic, shields are divided into three distinct, realistic tiers based on material and weight:
Buckler (Wood & Copper): A small, agile shield. It blocks 75% of incoming damage but allows the player to move at full speed while guarding. It raises almost instantly, favoring fast-paced combat.
Tower Shield (Iron): The classic shield. It provides 100% frontal damage protection but significantly slows down movement speed when raised.
Pavise Shield (Heavy Iron): A massive defense tool. Right-clicking while crouching plants the Pavise into the ground, turning it into a temporary, stationary cover block. Players can hide behind it to safely reload crossbows or fire bows.
Practical Modifications
Players can upgrade their shields at a Smithing Table using everyday materials for utility tweaks:
Leather Padding: Coating the shield in leather muffles the sound of impacts. Blocking an attack won't alert nearby mobs, making it ideal for sneaking through Ancient Cities.
Iron Spike: Adds a blunt spike to the front. Performing a perfect timed block (parry) inflicts minor thorn damage and shoves the attacker back one block.
Shield Lantern: Attaching a lantern illuminates the area directly ahead while guarding, though taking hits slightly reduces the lantern's durability.
Visual Wear
Shields show real-time durability; wooden ones splinter, metal ones get dented, and enemy arrows remain physically stuck in them until repaired.
