Title: Craftable Hang Glider — A Renewable, Low-Power Alternative to Elytra
Problem:
Elytra is currently the only gliding/flight item in the game, and it's exclusively found in End ship loot. This means players have no access to any gliding mechanic until they've defeated the Ender Dragon and explored the End — a very late-game milestone. There's no early or mid-game option for soft landings or controlled descents.
Proposed Solution:
Add a craftable Hang Glider, equipped in the off-hand (shield) slot. Crafting recipe: Phantom Membrane + String + Sticks (exact quantities TBD for balance suggestion: 2 membrane, 4 string, 2 sticks)
Function:When equipped in the off-hand and the player jumps/falls, holding the glider slows descent and allows gentle forward gliding similar to a very weak elytra. No altitude gain, no firework boosting, no chest-slot flight.
Durability: Short lifespan — depletes quickly even with light use, requiring frequent repair.
Repair: Phantom Membrane (anvil repair or crafting grid), tying it thematically to the same material used to mend elytra.
Why this doesn't compete with Elytra:
Off-hand slot means it can't be worn with a chestplate equipped, so there's a tradeoff (no armor while gliding).
Weaker performance (descent-slowing only, no real flight.
Short durability keeps it from being a "set and forget" tool it's meant for occasional safe landings, not exploration-scale travel.
Elytra remains the only true flight item and stays locked behind End city loot.
