Copper rails!

There have been a few other suggestions about copper rails, but they all suggested copper rails to replace the current rails. The solution to add copper rails but keep iron rails useful is simple: make copper rails only work in straight lines! So if you want to go up, down or you want to change the direction, you need iron rails. This would make it much more early game friendly, since you will need less iron to make a rail system. And since you can only go in 2 directions, north-south and east-west, there will be only 16 new block types! This change can encourage players to build outposts far away from your home base. Copper rails can also be a bit slower to make it more balanced.
