Ironically, minecraft may be giving us too much inventory space. Especially with pouches becoming available in the next update. And with the introduction of Netherite Armor and new uses for leather armor, I think the time might be ripe to rebalance the way we handle items in minecraft. My suggestion is twofold: first, cut away most of the inventory. From now on when you start the game, all you have is your hotbar. Step two, introduce Backpacks. Backpacks expand the inventory to its former level but at the expense of the chest armor slot, same as Elytra. It introduces a tradeoff to the game, one can't be an invincible can of beans decked out in full netherite armor and also ready to build with a full inventory of materials. It would also see things like llamas and donkeys and the upcoming chest-boats getting more frequent use to expand player mobility. Here are a few tiers for backpacks as I see them.
Basic Backpack, leather box around a chest or barrel. Standard size inventory. Dye-able
Ender Backpack, leather box around an ender chest, links to the same inventory as the ender chest.
Old Backpack, prestige item, a fancy backpack found as dungeon chest loot.
Piglin Backpack, same as above but found as nether loot
