I recently started a hardcore world in a snowy tundra with a nearby taiga. Early survival was challenging due to limited food and exploration options. I set up a small goat farm, bringing two goats from a mountain and using my last wheat to breed them, assuming they would drop meat like other farm animals. When I realized they don’t, I had to release them and travel over 1000 blocks for cows instead.
This made me question the current role of goats. They are rare, tied to mountain biomes, hard to transport, and yet their practical use is very limited compared to other farm animals.
I suggest expanding their functionality. At minimum, goats could drop raw mutton (similar to sheep) and a small amount of string or leather, making them meaningfully usable without becoming overpowered.
Additionally, goats could gain biome variants (snowy peaks, stony peaks, badlands/savanna mountains) and different aggression levels, genetically transferred as horses, making breeding more interesting.
Most importantly, goats feel like a perfect candidate for a mountain mount. Their natural jumping and ramming behavior already fits traversal gameplay. Riding goats could allow faster navigation through steep terrain by chaining jumps and climbing slopes more efficiently. More aggressive variants could even serve as combat-oriented mounts for cliffs and vertical encounters.
Right now, goats feel like they have strong design potential but lack a clear gameplay role in Minecraft’s ecosystem.
