Akin to Sulphur Geysers, Smooth Basalt blocks placed on top of Magma blocks of Lava should function as vulcanic vents, emitting occasional or constant (above Magma block or above Lava, respectively) rising column of ash. When placed above Lava block, there should a periodic eruption (much rarer than geysers), when the ash column changes into a dense stream of lava particles. Like geysers, these eruptions would propel entities upwards (height of the eruption is proportional to depth of Lava underneath), however, would also set the entity on fire, unless immune.
An eruption is destructive, destroying any blocks in its way. Not dropping them as items to avoid introducing balance-breaking ways to automatically harvest blocks.
Ash columns cause a slow accumulation of Ash on nearby blocks. Eruptions cause a large one-time accumulation of Ash on blocks up to a radius equal to half the eruption height away.
Ash functions very similar to soft snow, not being harvesteble as a block and letting entities fall through, causing suffocation damage. If an entity falls through ash on top of magma block, the damage from the magma block is still applied.
Destroying Ash (fastest with a shovel) yields Bonemeal, to reflect the fertilising qualities of vulcanic ash irl. Ash itself can be harvested in a Bucket. Placing 9 Buckets of Ash on a Crafting Grid yields a block of Tuff (compressed ash) making Tuff renewable in a laborious way, viable only for late-game or projects demanding huge quantities.
