Right now, the geyser is great for for aesthetics but not much else after that. With the current delays between eruptions and complete lack of control of when those eruptions occur, the block is nearly useless in terms of use. Something that would make it a lot better in terms of use is if the player could control when the geysers went off.
There's many ways this could be implemented such as something as simple as activating a redstone signal to cause the geyser to activate. Maybe the geyser goes off immediate when magma is placed under it then goes into it's 20-60 second cycle. What I believe the best solution is using Blast Furnaces. By placing 1-4 water above a potent sulfur and a blast furnace below, you can cause the geyser eruption by placing a magma block or lava bucket inside.
