Mojang- first make caves above y=0 dependent on the biome above (desert, ice, jungle with special properties), then deeper caves alone have special variants (drip stone, lush, sulfur, deep dark). And ore textures can be in sandstone, ice, etc. this would balance all the new biomes while still putting an emphasis on actual mining. This also makes additional biomes practically unlimited (marble, crystal, who knows?). Caves and cliffs was incredible but it needs to go further.
