Right now, when playing survival, most of the discoveries are random or done using tools that are not part of the game. I think that by adding maps as rewards it would improve the exploration experience without requiring major gameplay changes. You could have location maps to different biomes, structures, dungeons, ruined portals, mineshafts and all other interesting locations. The more common the target, the higher the chance to find a map to it, while the overall chance of finding any map is still relatively rare. Some maps like village locations could also be rare as loot and more common when trading to add some diversity.
Imagine finding a shipwreck with a treasure map. Then in the treasure chest finding a map to a dungeon, then a jungle temple, then to a village and so on. Great way to experience the world without the feel of been aimless, and if you don't want to do that then it's easy to ignore.
As a bonus and with a tweak of how ruined portals are generated, it could be used to locate areas in the nether as well. For example, generate some portals that would be near specific nether biomes or structures and then have maps in the overworld point to the portals. This would also add to the lore of the world in a way.
