Potions are classic to Minecraft, but feel a bit outdated, and useless in most situations outside of some PvP scenarios.
Buffing the durations or making them stackable would make them way more usable in most scenarios. I think moving the current level 2 effects and making them level three, then adding a second tier between the current one and two would open up more possibilities for duration increasing.
Let's use speed as an example. The current level 1 is +20 percent speed, while the current level 2 is +40 percent. I think their should be a tier in between with +30 percent. It would now take two glowstone dust, to reach the new level 3 which would be the same as the old level 2. But as a plus, that would let you use two redstone to increase the duration again as well. So now you could a redstone dust and a glowstone dust to get a 3:00 potion of speed two which is +30 percent speed, or you could use two redstone dust to get a 20 minute potion of speed 1. Potions would be much more usable if the effects didn't wear off so fast.
My next idea is to add another modifier like redstone that would make the potion stackable. This would make it far less punishing to carry potions since you would save a lot of inventory space. As for the item, it could be echo shards, or popped chorus fruit, or any other obscure item with very little usage. Or lapis could work. Just please let it be used in addition with redstone and glowstone like gunpowder.
Lasty, please bring potion cauldrons to java.
