Okay, so I know there are a lot of posts here saying that Mojang needs to revert the whole number thing, and I don't think that's the case. Instead, this post is here to propose a simple idea. That idea is to stop trying to please everyone with one update, and instead focus on one group for each time the game receives new content.
Another thing is to have size variation in updates. There isn't a need to do small drops or large updates only, as it's entirely possible to have smaller, bite-sized updates twice a year, while also having a larger update that adds more content every 2-3 years. This would also allow specific versions more time to sit and let mod developers focus on making their mods while the big updates are in progress.
Basically, a cycle of 2-4 small drops for the first year or two years , and then a huge awesome update after another full year of development
