I love to create map-arts. It just sucks that to get a decent image, you have to make a staircased one rather than a flat map. Although you get better images that way, it is rather time consuming on top of some images needing more than one map even with staircasing to look good. With colored blocks such as terracotta, concrete, wool/carpet, or even stained glass having different shades on maps, not only would it make sense for the items and their colors, it would be so much easier to make decent maps without the need for staircasing. It wouldn't eliminate the need altogether, but it would make flat maps look better and take less time to make a good looking map!
TL;DR: Make colored blocks like terracotta, concrete, wool/carpet, and stained glass have different shades on maps.
