We don't need vertical slabs (as separate blocks), we need a tool that can rotate blocks. This would allow players to not only rotate slabs to get vertical slabs, it would also allow horizontal (?) stairs, rotated regular blocks and upside-down versions of blocks. Just imagine the potential: Vertical slabs, upside-down builds, sideways builds, and probably a lot more than I can't think of. I think it should be allowed to rotate bedrock as this doesn't move or destroy it. I also think it should be crafted with something simple, like iron or maybe even copper. Additionally, I think the player should be able to crouch use the tool to toggle the rotation axis. The addition of this could even be used to add naturally spawning rotated blocks in-game, e.g., sculk spreading on cave walls / ceilings with rotated sculk blocks spawning there as well, rotated versions of common blocks like stone or dirt for variety (if this doesn't already exist). This tool could be a wrench (which I think is most logical), or it could be something else, though idk what else it could be. Mojang, PLEASE add this!
