Fireflies could allow players to see better at night when in radius.

Fireflies could be placed down in certain areas, maybe by a bottle, and they could make the light level around a certain area brighter. They would appear at night and allow for better vision while also looking beautiful. Their light would make it easier to spot mobs in the dark. Some mobs could even be scared of them because of their light.

    How about making them give the player 'night vision' for a short period of time?
