While Slimes may have been based on Gelatinous Cubes from D&D, I think Sulfur Cubes are the better comparison. Sulfur Cubes should be corrosive, and give little to no pushback when mobs run into them. Instead, they should just be able to be walked through, but give damage when done so. They should be able to be fed certain blocks/items/mobs that they will hold inside until they digest them. But if you give them certain blocks as shown in Minecraft Live, they will not be able to digest them and will instead just hold onto them, becoming non-corrosive and acting as a ball.
