The "sulfur cube" doesn't reflect the properties of sulfur, despite its name. Sulfur is a flammable, brittle crystal under normal conditions. In contrast, the "sulfur cube" is amorphous, elastic, and bouncy. It also doesn't seem to have anything to do with fire.
It seems to me the mob should consist of vulcanized rubber.
In real life, vulcanized rubber is produced by heating natural rubber with the addition of sulfur. Sulfur caves have all of these:
- There is a lot of sulfur, obviously.
- The abundance of glow lichen leads me to believe that it may be the source of natural rubber.
- Everything is heated by the heat of the earth.
Vulcanization would prevent the newborn "rubber cube" from oxidizing and make it rigid enough to hold heavy blocks inside.
Why this is important:
- The name "sulfur cube" sets wrong player expectations about the mob. When people hear "sulfur" they expect explosives or something like that (you can notice it by looking at suggestions on this site). The mob's design and behavior though screams "neutrality".
- We already have a lot of features in this update that have the word "sulfur" in their names: the biome, the full block family and the potent sulfur. It might be a good idea to give the mob a different name to avoid confusion.
- While Minecraft isn't a realistic game, some of its features do have educational value. This feature could be one of them.
- This would allow us to add features related to the “rubber cube” in the future, such as a rubber block.
