Wouldn't it be cool if you needed to find an ancient city and all you had to do was to put an echo shard on a map, and a certain area would be either marked or would glow? Being able to locate things on maps by combining items related to structures or biomes is a great idea and still requires players to adventure. The idea is that a player can map out an area, and by combining items (like echo shards for ancient cities, rotten flesh or bones for dungeons, Keys or Copper for Trail chambers, etc. ), if they crossed over any structures, they would be pinpointed by the combined item. On the other hand, to be balanced, Minecraft can decide if there are none of the requested structures (like you didn't cross over an ancient city), if the failed combination items will be refunded or not.
