I was thinking how the deep dark could still be scary in Peaceful mode as, without the wardens, would lose much of what makes it scary in the first place.
Then I learned of a horror game called SOMA, which includes a "safe mode". In this mode, the monsters in this game still behave like they would. but if when they spot you, they don't attack you instead just staying still and acknowledging you.
I think something like this would be perfect for peaceful mode as it still gives that sense of danger while also providing a testing grounds of sorts to new players, who might be way to scared to enter, I would have when I started playing.
Now, I do realize that unless people looked into the deeper mechanics of Minecraft, they might never know that this "safe mode" option even exist. Which is why I would also like to suggest having peaceful mode as a kind of safe practice mode to help players ease into Minecraft survival mode proper. This would mean changing peaceful mode to quite a degree.
I think in the long run it will be a good investment to make as one of biggest problems I heard people complaint about is that "it's too scary for young children". Having a mode that helps those who might not yet be comfortable with anything remotely scary would help them build confidence when confronting the many terrors that lurk in this wonderful blocky sandbox.
Though, I doubt that even this would make the wardens less scary.
