Trees should be able to drop saplings that get auto planted (so the forests can spread)
Possibly a change to forest fire dynamics (to destroy large swathes of trees and create meadows more effectively, but without burning the whole forest)
Termites or other mobs will sometimes eat trees (some mobs might eat only certain types of trees) and trees can die from old age
Trees can grow over time
Biome (as shown is F3 debug information) will change with forest
Tree growth, sprouting, and death could tie in with seasons if those are added
Not necessary, but other forest plants and soil health might be added to more accurately reflect real forests? (Ex, soil moisture content, soil nitrogen content)
