I’m gonna say it—Minecraft is not a survival game. It’s a building-and-exploration sandbox with some basic combat and survival elements tacked on.
The hunger system feels intrusive and isn’t very meaningful given how easy food is to get. Cooked beef, porkchop, and golden carrot are evidently the best food items, while requiring little effort to acquire, making all other options arbitrary.
I wish to see all of that changed:
- Remove hunger, and keep running permanently available.
- Natural health regen recovers ½ a heart per minute, pausing for 30 seconds upon taking damage. Consuming food instantly resumes natural regeneration.
- Change the saturation effect to prevent players from eating more food.
- Most foods should take 3 seconds to consume.
- All raw food applies a weak regeneration effect (2 hearts over 10 seconds).
- All cooked food applies saturation, weak regeneration, and an additional unique effect, all for 5 minutes.
Introduce a proper culinary system with a new Culinary Table:
- Accepts up to 4 raw ingredients (minimum 2 required), producing a “meal” that applies saturation, regeneration, and the combined effects of each included ingredient, all lasting 20 minutes.
Verdict: Food should require thoughtfulness; be consumed when the player is safe, and preferably in preparation for whatever activity follows. It sustains in its most basic form and provides extended convenience in its most advanced.
Compared to potions, food should apply slower, provide weaker effects, but last much longer.
