Lady Agnes had recently (as of Feb. 10th) confirmed during a Minecraft NOW livestream that frogs will no longer eat fireflies due to the fact that many species of real-life fireflies are poisonous to frogs. However, I would like to point out an alternative solution to this problem:
It might actually be a good educational opportunity for them to still include frogs eating fireflies. Perhaps when frogs consume a firefly, they would enter breeding mode, then after laying their spawn in the water have a percentage chance of dying. This would emulate the cycle of life since the frog spawn will hatch, a few will survive (the rest flopping onto and dying on land), and the rest will grow up to replace the mother that died. Of course, this would require some balancing from Mojang and the community to ensure that frogs wouldn't eventually overload the world, but it could be a fantastic opportunity for people to learn something new!
Personally, I didn't know certain fireflies were poisonous to frogs until I watched that Minecraft NOW stream, so think of how many people that could teach!! Of course, it's sad for them to die, but it really could make for a great introduction of the cycle of life to younger audiences, and the poison factor to people like me who didn't know, especially because it would happen 100% without any player interaction!
