I've have been playing this game since 9 years and in my opinion the hostile mob spawning has aged very badly, to begin with it's not a challenge or even difficult to defend yourselves once you get decently prepared it's just an annoyance.
You can't even enjoy of the nocturnal enviroments the game could offer, because most of the people just spam the bed.
Torch spamming is a gauche way of solving this, because all of this just encourages the players to convert they bases to a glowing landmark.
So, to beggin with:
Hostile mobs should be able to spawn only in certain biomes, ex: deserts, badlands, maybe swamps?
And they will spawn in deepers parts of caves, maybe under level 40 or 30?
Also, I think it could be neat to add some structures like campsites, overgrowned caves exposed in the surface and of course, more dungeons for more mobs, bigger and interesting, witches huts could have a revamp maybe?
Some exceptions like wastelands inside biomes could be really awesome, those could change depending of the biome and they could have dead trees, trenches, creeper holes (with ash blocks)
and as well as the campsites, those places could spawn mobs even in daylight. (maybe with helmets to protect them)
New Lunar event could be added, the bloodmoon, this would be a very rare event, and you wouldn't be able to sleep.
All the overworld will be tinted with the crimson tone of the moon, and buffed enemies would spawn everywhere, so you better be prepared for that.
